- Recent reports suggest an alcohol-induced derangement of cell-mediated immunity in alcohol patients. Reduced total circulating lymphocyte count and infiltration of the liver with immunologically competent T-cells, decreased suppressor T-cell numbers and suppressor function, have been described in alcoholics suffering from alcoholic hepatitis. More recently, Actis et al. demonstrated cytotoxicity of circulating lymphocytes to autologous hepatocytes in alcoholic patients with different types of alcoholic liver disease. In experimental laboratory studies thymic atrophy was noted in alcohol-fed rats and Yamamoto reported a reduction of T-cells in mice on prolonged alcohol exposure. All these reports suggest that a deranged T-cell limb of the immune system may have a pathogenic role in alcoholic liver disease. Our study was designed to observe the effects of prolonged alcohol consumption on the T-cell limb of the immune system of rats on a controlled alcohol diet.
